Things to do Before Moving Checklist

Welcome to the ultimate moving checklist. Here you will find a list of all the things you should do before moving into your new home. Let's face it: With the excitement of a new home, it's easy to forget some important to do items.

So before you move check out this moving checklist to know what should be done before moving and unpacking bog you down.

1. TURN ON UTILITIES

Electric, gas, water, etc—don't assume they'll be on when you start moving in. Once you have a set closing date, call and get all of your utilities setup and in your name. If the seller has called and scheduled the utilities to be turned off, it can be more of a headache for you to get them turned back on. Don't forget to call for internet and cable services.

2. DO A DEEP CLEAN

What better way to move into a home, than a super clean home. It's so much easier to do a deep cleaning job in an empty home. You can recruit a cleaning service, hire someone you know or even do it yourself, but how great it is to move into a clean home.

3. CHANGE THE LOCKS

Changing the locks is not required, however, it is just a basic safety measure. This step cannot be done until after closing.

4. TEST SMOKE & CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

Make sure these are functioning properly to protect your new home from fires and other emergencies. Go ahead and put new batteries in to ensure they are fresh and new.

5. ALARM SYSTEM?

Does the home already have an alarm system? If so, it is as simple as calling the alarm company and having it setup in your name. If there is not an alarm system, call and schedule to have a company come out for an estimate. Did you know having an alarm system can save on your homeowners insurance???

6. TACKLE RENOVATIONS

The last thing you want to do is have to live in a construction zone after moving in. If you are able to do any renovations before moving in it will make the moving process that much easier. If you are wanting to get quotes on renovation possibilities, you can bring in someone for bids beforehand, you just have to coordinate with your realtor and the homeowner. Renovations cannot begin until after closing.

7. GET A HOME WARRANTY

Did you get a home warranty worked into the purchase of your new home? It is always best to ask, however if you did not get one, ask your realtor a good company to purchase a home warranty from and get your own. Most basic coverages costs about $300 for a year and covers you if any major issues arise after moving in. It gives you a piece of mind knowing you are covered if any appliances, AC, etc decide to quit working.

8. FORWARD YOUR MAIL

Don’t forget to update your address with the United States Postal Service. (Visit the Official Postal Service Change of Address website.) The postal service charges a $1 fee to verify your identity when changing your address online, so you'll need a credit or debit card.

Note: The postal service will stop forwarding periodicals to your new address 60 days after you move, so alert magazines and newspapers that you’ve moved.

9. UPDATE YOUR BILLING ADDRESS

Alert your credit card companies, banks, or any other financial institutions of your new address. Also, if you frequently buy anything from a website, you can avoid a future headache by updating your profile with your new address.

10. CHILDPROOF YOUR HOME

If you have children, don't forget to childproof your new home. There will be new locations around the home that need to be childproofed to ensure your children's safety.

11. GET TO KNOW YOUR NEW HOME

Don't forget to get to know your new home. Make sure you know an escape route in the event of an emergency. Also locate the breaker box and water cutoff should you need it.

Follow this list and it should help make your moving process a little less stressful. HAPPY MOVING!!!
